10 Tough Questions to Ask Your Solar Installer

The Interview Checklist

A solar system is a 20-year investment attached to your most valuable asset. Treat the quote process like a job interview.

  1. "Who is doing the actual electrical work?"
Are they employees or sub-contractors? If sub-contractors, who are they and are they accredited?
  2. "Will you handle the grid connection application?"
Some cheap retailers leave this paperwork to you. It is a nightmare. Ensure they do it.
  3. "What happens if my inverter fails in 3 years?"
Do I call you, or do I have to chase the manufacturer in China? You want a retailer who handles all warranty claims for you.
  4. "Is this a 'String' or 'Micro-inverter' system?"
Understand what you are buying. String is cheaper but prone to shading issues. Micros are better but cost more.
  5. "Can you show me your CEC Accreditation ID?"
Don't just take their word for it. Ask to see the digital ID card of the installer.
  6. "Is monitoring included in the price?"
Does the app show just solar production, or also your home's consumption? You usually need an extra "smart meter" for the latter. Ask for it.
  7. "What is the wind rating of the racking system?"
Crucial for cyclone zones or high-wind areas.
  8. "Do you take a deposit?"
Standard is 10%. Never pay 50% or 100% upfront.
  9. "What is your workmanship warranty?"
    Aim for 5-10 years.
  10. "Can you provide 3 local references?"
Call them. Ask if the installer cleaned up after themselves.
